Füssli, 1830 in Zürich geboren, wurde schon früh von seinen Eltern im Malen und Zeichnen gefördert. Ab 1847 erhielt er Unterricht am Städelschen Kunstinstitut bei Jakob Becker und setzte seine Ausbildung beim Historienmaler Johann Baptiste Berdellé fort. Von da spannt sich der Bogen seines Schaffens über 70 Jahre bis ins Jahr 1905, als er sein Atelier in Rom aufgab und sich zur Ruhe setzte.
